Understanding New Federal rules & Regulations
September 10, 2020 9-11 a.m.
Join OSSBA staff attorney Brandon Carey for an in depth look at what administrators need to know regarding extensive new Title IX rules.
Topic will include:
- What is sexual harrasment
- What programs and activities are governed by Title IX?
- Proper investigatory procedures and processes, including appeals and informal resolution processes.
- Investigating allegations of impartiality and conflicts of interests.
- When is a person's sexual predisposition or prior sexual behavior relevant?
Attendees also will have access to new model forms aligned to the new rules.

Title IX
Title IX is part of the Education Amendments of 1972, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities receiving Federal assistance. For over three decades, Title IX has worked to promote equality in educational opportunities, yet it continues to face opposition. This tutorial will discuss the impact and importance of Title IX in schools. We will also discuss how to stay in compliance with the law. In this tutorial, you will learn the following objectives. - What is Title IX? - 10 Key Areas Addressed by the Law - Who Enforces Title IX? - How to File a Complaint - Grievance Procedures - Filing with the OCR. - This training will consist of an in-depth discussion of the Title IX process -- from the allegation through the appeal process, and will include training on the requirement to avoid prejudgment of the facts, conflicts of interest, and bias. Finally, Brandon leads attendees through a model Title IX scenario and investigation
- This training is designed to meet K-12 training requirements for any employee involved in the Title IX investigation process.
